Waste water balancing tank

A balancing tank is designed to eliminate concentration fluctuations of waste water impurities. A suitable type is selected depending on the peak emission characteristics. To calculate the balancing tank capacity, the data from process engineers and formulas are used.

The impurity concentrations in waste water, particularly production water, may vary dramatically within one day. That is why special tanks must be installed, which help obtaining the uniform feeding of a liquid with average concentration. A balancing tank does this job successfully. It not only allows to get rid of flow rate fluctuations for biological treatment but also provides a significant saving in capital and operating costs.

System Types

The needed type is selected based on the concentration fluctuation nature of the substances, as well as their quantity. If the water emission is non-constant and small-volume, a contact type is used. But, in most cases, a flow-type waste water balancing tank is used. It is manufactured in a form of multichannel tank, sometimes supplemented with agitating mechanisms.

This system type may be:

  • Multichannel
  • Balancing mixer
  • Bubbled

The first type is required to balance peak emissions when the substances’ hydraulic velocities are not faster than 5 mm/s, and their concentrations do not exceed 500 mg/l. A bubbled-type mixer is used for waters containing particles with the hydraulic velocities up to 10 mm/s at any infeed mode. In this case, water is mixed with compressed air. A system with mechanical agitation is used when the content of suspended particles exceeds 50 mg/l.

Treatment Process

After the passing preliminary treatment and the grate, the waste waters are directed to the balancing tank. It involves agitation of the effluents by a special agitator or pump. In the latter case, the operation is done using special level sensors located in the tank itself. You may order manufacturing a system of any capacity, which fits your enterprise’s needs best.

For the preliminary cleaning of liquid from insoluble impurities, a settling balancing tank is used. Besides, it can be used as a local intra-plant treatment facility. In it, the contents are averaged, insoluble contaminations are crushed, and colloidal impurity concentrations are reduced.

For that, considered are factors, such as:

  • Suppression ratio
  • Impurities concentration (maximum, mean, and admissible)
  • Tank capacity

When designing a balancing tank in terms of the capacity, the number of sections must be selected, which would be optimum for the particular flow velocity. To perform the exact calculations, the information is used, received from the process engineers who can predict the flow nature. For that, the operation of similar facilities is analyzed and the observation method is used.

Thus, a balancing tank is a rectangular tank designed as part of various stations intended for waste liquid treatment.
